Shaping the Future of Public Health Nurses’ Primary Health Care Practice.

On October 29, 2004, Drs Donna Meagher-Stewart and Megan Aston held a knowledge translation forum titled, “Shaping the Future of Public Health Nurses’ Primary Health Care Practice.” The forum was designed as an interactive dialogue amongst researchers, public health nurses, public health management, educators, policy makers, and other professionals to exchange knowledge relevant to their study, “Fostering Citizen Participation and Collaborative practice: Tapping the Wisdom and Voices of Public Health Nurses in Nova Scotia” ,(commonly referred to as the “PHNs’ Voices Project”). Research findings, conclusions, and recommendations were presented and discussed. The report of the PHNs’ Voices Project , which is included here on the CHNAC web site, was distributed at the forum.

The forum was designed to build public health capacity, and in so doing proceedings of the day included presentation of the research, as well as current understandings of the importance of knowledge translation in relation to policy decision making and practice by Dr. Nancy Edwards; the latest developments at the Public Health Agency of Canada, including the Skills Enhancement for Health Surveillance program by Jennifer Lowe; and a presentation of the National Collaborating Centres, with particular attention to the Collaborating Centre for Determinants of health in the Atlantic Region by Jane Oram. The forum was facilitated by Jane Underwood.
